Abuja, Nigeria — The atmosphere at Eagles Square brimmed with pride, purpose, and patriotism as the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) marked the historic maiden edition of National Police Day 2025. The event, graced by dignitaries from across the nation, served as a powerful tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of the gallant men and women of the NPF.
Speaking at the event, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to deepening reforms, strengthening community policing, and embracing a future of innovation-driven security architecture.
> “This is more than a celebration—it is a rededication,” IGP Egbetokun declared. “Our reform agenda is in full swing, built on capacity building, ethical reorientation, modern tools, transparency, and accountability. We are laying the groundwork for a Police Force that commands trust, upholds justice, and mirrors the democratic ideals of our great nation.”
He emphasized a strategic shift towards technology adoption, intelligence-led operations, and grassroots community engagement, describing these as the cornerstones of the Force’s new service delivery model.
> “We are the guardians of peace, protectors of the realm. Let our service be a reflection of honour, integrity, and unshakable professionalism,” he urged.
The IGP paid heartfelt tribute to officers who wear the uniform with pride, acknowledging the daily risks they brave to safeguard society. He also honoured the memory of fallen heroes—officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
> “Their memories are etched in our hearts. Their legacy is eternal. To their families, we offer not just sympathy, but unwavering support,” he said solemnly.
April 7th was officially declared National Police Day, a date now etched in history as a symbol of recognition, reflection, and renewed resolve. The day also highlights the evolution of policing in Nigeria—from the formation of a colonial constabulary in 1861 to the formal establishment of the Nigeria Police Force on April 1, 1930.
> “Our journey from humble beginnings to a formidable national institution speaks to Nigeria’s relentless pursuit of unity, order, and security,” said Egbetokun.
The event was presided over by the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, representing the President. In attendance were prominent dignitaries including members of the National Assembly, the Senate and House Committees on Police Affairs, traditional rulers, service chiefs, members of the diplomatic corps, retired and serving officers, and families of police personnel.
Notable among them were Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser; Suleiman Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs; and Deputy Governors of Delta, Rivers, and Ondo States.
As the sun set on a day of remembrance and celebration, the message was loud and clear: the Nigeria Police Force is not just transforming—it is evolving into a beacon of hope, justice, and national unity.
