NUPENG Leadership Visits Presidential Villa, Confers Grand Patron Award on President Tinubu

The newly elected National Executive President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Comrade Salimon Akanni Oladiti, on Thursday led the union’s newly constituted National Administrative Council and other senior labour leaders on a courtesy visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The visit marked a significant moment in the relationship between the organised labour movement and the Federal Government, with the NUPENG leadership expressing its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the administration in advancing Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

A major highlight of the visit was the conferment of the Grand Patron Award on President Tinubu by Comrade Oladiti, in recognition of the President’s support for the union and his administration’s reforms in the petroleum sector.

Speaking during the visit, Oladiti commended President Tinubu for what he described as bold and far-reaching reforms in the oil and gas industry. He also expressed appreciation to the President for his support during NUPENG’s successful 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference, held in April 2026.

The NUPENG president reaffirmed the union’s readiness to work with the Federal Government in advancing policies and initiatives that would promote growth, stability, job creation and improved welfare for workers in the petroleum and natural gas sector.

He pledged the union’s continued support for the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while emphasising the importance of constructive engagement between government and organised labour in addressing challenges confronting the nation’s oil and gas industry.

The delegation included the Hon. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri; and members of NUPENG’s newly elected National Administrative Council.

The engagement further underscored the importance of sustained dialogue between the Federal Government and organised labour, particularly at a time when reforms in the petroleum sector continue to shape Nigeria’s economic landscape.

With the new NUPENG leadership signalling its willingness to deepen engagement with the government, the visit is expected to strengthen cooperation between the union and the Presidency on issues affecting workers, energy security, industrial relations and the broader development of Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

The meeting therefore marked not only a formal engagement between the Presidency and the newly elected NUPENG leadership, but also a renewed commitment to partnership, dialogue and shared responsibility in building a more productive and sustainable petroleum industry.

Gunmen Hijack Funeral Convoy, Abduct Mourners Escorting FRSC Deputy Commander's Body, Demand ₦50m Ransom

A funeral procession conveying the remains of a late Deputy Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Augustine O. Ikwue, has been attacked by suspected kidnappers along the Ososo–Ajaokuta axis of Kogi State, with several mourners reportedly abducted. The late officer, popularly known as "Etume Zero," was being transported to his hometown in Benue State for burial when the armed men ambushed the convoy. According to reports, the attackers abducted several mourners and initially took away the corpse of the deceased officer into the bush alongside the victims. Citizen journalist and activist Meddy Olotu disclosed that the kidnappers later abandoned the corpse, which was subsequently recovered near Ejule in Kogi State.
