CP Yomi Shogunle Hosts U.S. Embassy INL, GAO Team in Abuja

The Commissioner of Police in charge of Special Intelligence Services (SIS), Elections Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, and the Safe School Protection Squad, CP Yomi Shogunle, has held a productive meeting with the Director of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), U.S. Embassy Abuja, and a delegation from the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) from Washington, D.C.

The high-level engagement, held at CP Shogunle’s office in Abuja, provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on issues of mutual interest and explore avenues for strengthening cooperation in policing, security, accountability and institutional effectiveness.

The meeting brought together senior representatives of the Nigerian Police Force and U.S. government institutions at a time when international partnerships and knowledge-sharing remain important to addressing emerging security challenges.

As the officer overseeing SIS, Elections Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, and the Safe School Protection Squad, CP Shogunle's portfolio places him at the intersection of intelligence gathering, election security, police performance assessment and the protection of schools and vulnerable communities.

The engagement with the U.S. Embassy's INL leadership and the GAO delegation therefore offered an important platform for discussions around strengthening institutional capacity, improving accountability mechanisms and sharing international best practices.

The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO), an independent, non-partisan agency that works for the U.S. Congress, conducts investigations and evaluations of government programmes and operations, with the aim of helping to improve efficiency, effectiveness and accountability.

The INL, meanwhile, supports international partnerships focused on strengthening law enforcement and justice institutions, combating transnational crime and addressing illicit drug trafficking and other security challenges.

The meeting between CP Shogunle and the U.S. representatives reflects the growing importance of collaboration between Nigerian and American institutions in tackling security concerns that increasingly transcend national borders.

Particular attention to areas such as election security, intelligence-led policing and safe-school protection is significant, given their direct implications for national stability and public safety.

The Safe School Protection Squad, under CP Shogunle's responsibilities, is particularly relevant to ongoing efforts to create safer learning environments and protect students, teachers and educational infrastructure from security threats.

The meeting also underscored the importance of effective planning, monitoring and evaluation in strengthening policing operations and ensuring that security interventions deliver measurable results.

For Nigeria, continued engagement with international partners provides opportunities to benefit from global experience, technical expertise and proven approaches to policing and public-sector accountability.

The discussions ended on a positive note, with the engagement described as productive and constructive. The meeting further demonstrated the shared interest in strengthening institutional partnerships and promoting practical solutions to common security and governance challenges.

The visit by the GAO delegation from Washington, D.C., and the participation of the U.S. Embassy INL leadership represent another step in deepening professional engagement between Nigerian and U.S. security and government institutions.

Such engagements are expected to contribute to enhanced cooperation, knowledge exchange and the continuous strengthening of Nigeria's security architecture.
