The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a South African woman at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, for allegedly attempting to smuggle 5.75 kilograms of heroin into Nigeria.
The suspect was apprehended by NDLEA operatives during a routine screening at the international wing of the airport after officers discovered the illicit drug concealed in her luggage. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect had arrived on an international flight and was subjected to a detailed search based on intelligence and profiling.
The seized heroin, weighing 5.75kg, is believed to have a high street value and was allegedly intended for distribution within Nigeria or onward trafficking to other destinations.
The arrest forms part of the agency's sustained offensive against transnational drug trafficking syndicates operating through Nigeria's airports, seaports, and land borders.
According to the NDLEA, the suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. The agency also disclosed that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal network linked to the drug shipment.
In addition to the Abuja airport seizure, NDLEA operatives recorded several other successful operations across different parts of the country, intercepting consignments of illicit drugs and arresting multiple suspects in ongoing nationwide enforcement operations.
The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA reaffirmed the agency's commitment to combating drug trafficking and abuse, stressing that Nigeria will not be used as a transit or destination point for illicit narcotics. He commended the professionalism and vigilance of the officers involved in the operation and urged members of the public to continue supporting the agency with credible intelligence.
The latest arrest further underscores the NDLEA's intensified campaign against drug cartels and its determination to safeguard the country from the devastating effects of illicit drug trafficking.
