10 NPF Officers Killed in Kebbi Gun Battle as Police Neutralise 17 Suspected Bandits


The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of 10 police officers who were killed in the line of duty during an encounter with a heavily armed group of suspected bandits in Kebbi State.

The incident occurred at about 9:25 a.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State, when police operatives intercepted suspected bandits reportedly moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.

According to the Nigeria Police Force, the operatives engaged the armed group in a fierce gun battle, resulting in the neutralisation of at least 17 suspected bandits, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed.

However, the encounter came at a heavy cost to the Force, as 10 police personnel lost their lives, while two others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

Two civilians were also reported killed during the engagement.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the officers and commiserated with their families, colleagues and loved ones.

The IGP described the fallen personnel as heroes who paid the ultimate price in the service of the nation and in fulfilment of their constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property.

He assured the families of the deceased officers that their sacrifices would not be forgotten, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force would continue to honour their memory and provide necessary support to their bereaved families.

The remains of the fallen officers have since been conveyed to Birnin Kebbi, while the security situation in the affected area has been brought under control.

The Police Force said additional security personnel have been deployed to the area to strengthen ongoing operations and pursue fleeing members of the criminal group.

The Nigeria Police Force also reaffirmed its commitment to bringing the fleeing suspects to justice, while assuring the injured officers and families of the deceased of continued support.

The Force paid tribute to the fallen personnel, describing their sacrifice as a painful reminder of the risks police officers face in the discharge of their duties to protect the Nigerian people.

Gunmen Hijack Funeral Convoy, Abduct Mourners Escorting FRSC Deputy Commander's Body, Demand ₦50m Ransom

A funeral procession conveying the remains of a late Deputy Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Augustine O. Ikwue, has been attacked by suspected kidnappers along the Ososo–Ajaokuta axis of Kogi State, with several mourners reportedly abducted. The late officer, popularly known as "Etume Zero," was being transported to his hometown in Benue State for burial when the armed men ambushed the convoy. According to reports, the attackers abducted several mourners and initially took away the corpse of the deceased officer into the bush alongside the victims.
