NUPENG Engages House Committee on Gas Resources on Accelerating Gas Utilization in Nigeria

The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), under the guidance of its National President, Comrade (Prince) Williams Akporeha, on Tuesday led a high-powered delegation to an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Gas Resources at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

The strategic engagement was convened to foster dialogue and collaboration between critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s gas value chain, with the central aim of accelerating gas utilization, enhancing market penetration, promoting domestication, and ensuring affordability of gas products across the country.

The NUPENG delegation was warmly received by the Chairman of the House Committee on Gas Resources, Rt. Hon. Nicholas Ebomo Mutu, OFR, alongside the Deputy Chairman and other distinguished members of the Committee.

In his opening remarks, Comrade Akporeha emphasized the pivotal role NUPENG continues to play in Nigeria’s oil and gas ecosystem, asserting that the union stands uniquely positioned to drive the national agenda for gas expansion. He noted that NUPENG's deep-rooted presence across the upstream, midstream, and downstream segments of the industry places it at a vantage point to harmonize the interests of workers, industry operators, and the government.

While addressing the Committee, the NUPENG President highlighted key challenges currently plaguing the gas sector, including infrastructure deficit, insecurity in key operational zones, inconsistent regulatory frameworks, and affordability issues. He stressed the urgent need for policy stability, targeted investments in gas infrastructure, and enhanced security for critical assets, particularly in the Niger Delta and other gas-producing regions.

Comrade Akporeha also reiterated the Union’s commitment to partnering with relevant government agencies and legislative bodies to drive reforms that would unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s abundant gas resources, create jobs, and provide cheaper, cleaner energy alternatives for millions of Nigerians.

In his response, the Chairman of the Committee, Rt. Hon. Nicholas Ebomo Mutu, lauded NUPENG for its proactive engagement and consistent advocacy for a robust and sustainable gas sector. He acknowledged the union as a key stakeholder in the energy space and assured that the legislature is working assiduously with the executive arm to ensure the availability and accessibility of gas products nationwide.

Hon. Mutu reaffirmed the Committee’s commitment to continuous collaboration with NUPENG and other stakeholders to actualize Nigeria’s gas expansion goals in line with the country’s energy transition roadmap.

The interactive session provided an opportunity for robust exchange of ideas, identification of policy gaps, and commitment to a unified approach towards repositioning the gas industry for national developments.

Gunmen Hijack Funeral Convoy, Abduct Mourners Escorting FRSC Deputy Commander's Body, Demand ₦50m Ransom

A funeral procession conveying the remains of a late Deputy Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Augustine O. Ikwue, has been attacked by suspected kidnappers along the Ososo–Ajaokuta axis of Kogi State, with several mourners reportedly abducted. The late officer, popularly known as "Etume Zero," was being transported to his hometown in Benue State for burial when the armed men ambushed the convoy. According to reports, the attackers abducted several mourners and initially took away the corpse of the deceased officer into the bush alongside the victims. Citizen journalist and activist Meddy Olotu disclosed that the kidnappers later abandoned the corpse, which was subsequently recovered near Ejule in Kogi State.
