PSC Describes Planned Protest by Retired Police Officers as Ill-Timed and Unnecessary, Reaffirms Commitment to Improved Welfare

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has described the planned protest by some retired Police Officers across the country as ill-timed, diversionary, and unnecessary, especially on issues that are already receiving the attention of relevant government authorities.

In a statement, the Commission noted that while it acknowledges the concerns of retired Police Officers regarding their welfare, it believes that staging a protest at a time when there is general consensus on the need to improve the condition of retired officers is unhelpful and counterproductive.

Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, mni, has consistently condemned the poor and discriminatory pension arrangements affecting certain categories of retired Police Officers. He has repeatedly called for a unified and streamlined pension scheme for the Police.

DIG Argungu has made several interventions towards addressing these issues and remains a vocal advocate for a fair and democratized Police pension system.

The PSC further assured that government agencies are currently addressing the disparities in the pension scheme with the aim of correcting the imbalance. The Commission urged the concerned retired officers to embrace dialogue and sustained engagement rather than resorting to protests and confrontations.

The Commission reiterated its unwavering commitment to the welfare of all Police Officers—serving or retired, junior or senior ranks. It advised the organizers of the proposed protest to reconsider their decision and opt for constructive dialogue in the interest of national peace and stability.

According to the Commission, Nigeria cannot afford needless distractions at this critical point in its democratic journey

Gunmen Hijack Funeral Convoy, Abduct Mourners Escorting FRSC Deputy Commander's Body, Demand ₦50m Ransom

A funeral procession conveying the remains of a late Deputy Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Augustine O. Ikwue, has been attacked by suspected kidnappers along the Ososo–Ajaokuta axis of Kogi State, with several mourners reportedly abducted. The late officer, popularly known as "Etume Zero," was being transported to his hometown in Benue State for burial when the armed men ambushed the convoy. According to reports, the attackers abducted several mourners and initially took away the corpse of the deceased officer into the bush alongside the victims. Citizen journalist and activist Meddy Olotu disclosed that the kidnappers later abandoned the corpse, which was subsequently recovered near Ejule in Kogi State.
