No Hiding Place for Smugglers!” Customs Unveils Smart Vehicle Verification System to Track Every Car in Nigeria

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has fired another shot in its war against vehicle smuggling with the launch of a powerful new digital platform that promises to transform how imported vehicles are verified across the country.

The innovation, called the Customs Verification Management System (CVMS), was officially unveiled on Monday at the NCS Headquarters in Abuja by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

Described as a game-changer in Customs modernization, the CVMS introduces a smart, secure, and centralized digital system designed to check the authenticity and duty payment status of imported vehicles in real time.

“The launch of this system is another score on the board for our bold transformation agenda,” Adeniyi declared. “For years, vehicle verification relied on outdated methods that created loopholes for fraud and revenue loss.”

Developed in collaboration with the Trade Modernization Project (TMP) and local tech experts, the CVMS empowers Nigerians to instantly verify vehicle details before purchase — bringing a new level of openness to an area long clouded by manipulation and misinformation.

“This new solution empowers the public and strengthens the integrity of our Service by promoting transparency, accountability, and trust,” Adeniyi emphasized.

With just a few clicks, the system allows vehicle owners, buyers, and enforcement officers to trace, confirm, and validate vehicle information within minutes — effectively shutting down avenues for smuggling and document forgery.

Adeniyi added that the CVMS will boost Customs efficiency, enhance enforcement operations, and rebuild public confidence in vehicle importation processes.

“In essence, this system brings openness to an area that was previously shrouded in uncertainty and manipulation,” he said.

He further explained that the initiative aligns with the Customs Service’s digital transformation vision, which leverages technology to simplify trade, block leakages, and strengthen national revenue.

“Across all our operations, we’re deploying innovative, technology-driven solutions to simplify processes, enhance transparency, and boost revenue,” he stated.

The Customs boss concluded that the CVMS reflects the Service’s unwavering commitment to building a smarter, faster, and more trusted institution — one that ensures every vehicle on Nigerian roads is properly cleared, verified, and traceable.

Gunmen Hijack Funeral Convoy, Abduct Mourners Escorting FRSC Deputy Commander's Body, Demand ₦50m Ransom

A funeral procession conveying the remains of a late Deputy Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Augustine O. Ikwue, has been attacked by suspected kidnappers along the Ososo–Ajaokuta axis of Kogi State, with several mourners reportedly abducted. The late officer, popularly known as "Etume Zero," was being transported to his hometown in Benue State for burial when the armed men ambushed the convoy. According to reports, the attackers abducted several mourners and initially took away the corpse of the deceased officer into the bush alongside the victims.
