FCT POLICE COMMAND ARRESTS SUSPECT BEHIND VIRAL VIDEO FALSELY ALLEGING BANDIT INVASION OF ABUJA

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the circulation of a viral video falsely alleging an ongoing bandit invasion of Abuja, a development that had sparked widespread panic among residents of the nation’s capital.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, the suspect was apprehended following a thorough digital investigation which traced the origin of the misleading content. The video, which gained traction across several social media platforms, falsely claimed that armed bandits had infiltrated parts of Abuja, causing fear and uncertainty among residents.

The Command described the video as “entirely fabricated and malicious,” stressing that there was no such security breach or attack within the Federal Capital Territory. Police authorities noted that the deliberate spread of false information poses a serious threat to public peace and national security.

“The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations,” the statement added, warning members of the public against engaging in the creation or dissemination of fake news capable of inciting panic.

The FCT Police Command further reassured residents of its unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order across the territory. It emphasized that security agencies remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring the safety of lives and property in Abuja and its environs.
Residents were urged to verify information before sharing, especially content relating to security matters, and to rely on official channels for credible updates. The Command also encouraged the public to report suspicious activities promptly to the nearest police station.
Security analysts have repeatedly cautioned that misinformation, particularly in the digital age, can escalate tensions and undermine ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat crime. 

The arrest, therefore, serves as a strong warning to individuals who exploit social media platforms to spread fear and destabilize society.

As calm returns to the FCT, authorities continue to monitor online activities closely, reiterating that anyone found culpable of spreading false security alerts will face the full weight of the law.

A funeral procession conveying the remains of a late Deputy Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Augustine O. Ikwue, has been attacked by suspected kidnappers along the Ososo–Ajaokuta axis of Kogi State, with several mourners reportedly abducted. The late officer, popularly known as "Etume Zero," was being transported to his hometown in Benue State for burial when the armed men ambushed the convoy. According to reports, the attackers abducted several mourners and initially took away the corpse of the deceased officer into the bush alongside the victims.
