Oyo Police Arrest Three Suspected Armed Robbers, Recover Illegal Firearm During Intelligence-Led Operation


The Oyo State Police Command has recorded another breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements with the arrest of three suspected armed robbers and the recovery of a locally fabricated pistol and other dangerous weapons during an intelligence-led operation in Ibadan.

The suspects were arrested on Monday, August 3, 2026, at about 12:30 p.m. by operatives of the Oluyole Divisional Police Headquarters while conducting a routine stop-and-search operation around the Rhema Bridge axis of Oluyole, Ibadan.



During the operation, officers intercepted a Bajaj motorcycle conveying three suspicious individuals. A thorough search of the suspects led to the recovery of a cut-to-size locally fabricated pistol and an axe concealed inside a black school bag in their possession. The suspects were immediately taken into custody, while the recovered exhibits were secured for further investigation.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are members of the Aiye and Eiye cult groups. They also reportedly confessed to participating in a series of violent crimes, including armed robbery. Consequently, the Command has intensified investigations to determine the full extent of their involvement in armed robbery, cult-related activities, and other criminal offences, while efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal network.

The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, psc, mnips, commended the vigilance, professionalism, and swift response of the operatives, noting that their proactive action prevented what could have resulted in violent criminal attacks.



He reaffirmed the Command's commitment to sustaining intelligence-led policing, enhanced visibility patrols, and strategic stop-and-search operations to deny criminals any opportunity to operate within Oyo State.

The Commissioner also appreciated the continued support and cooperation of residents, urging members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, movements, or activities through the appropriate police channels.

He assured residents that the Oyo State Police Command remains resolute in its mission to safeguard lives and property and maintain peace, law, and order across the state.

A funeral procession conveying the remains of a late Deputy Corps Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Augustine O. Ikwue, has been attacked by suspected kidnappers along the Ososo–Ajaokuta axis of Kogi State, with several mourners reportedly abducted. The late officer, popularly known as "Etume Zero," was being transported to his hometown in Benue State for burial when the armed men ambushed the convoy. According to reports, the attackers abducted several mourners and initially took away the corpse of the deceased officer into the bush alongside the victims.
