ABUJA, Nigeria – The National President of the Police Officers' Wives Association (POWA), Chief Mrs. Olufunmilola Mutiat Disu, has described the Nigeria Police Trust Fund's maiden Skill Acquisition and Empowerment Programme for spouses of junior police officers as a landmark intervention that will strengthen police families, improve officers' welfare and contribute to national security.
Speaking on Monday at the flag-off ceremony of the programme, Mrs. Disu commended the Executive Secretary, Management and Board of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund for initiating what she called a visionary and impactful programme designed to improve the economic wellbeing of police families.
She noted that supporting police officers goes beyond providing operational equipment and logistics, stressing that investing in the welfare of their families directly enhances officers' morale, professionalism and effectiveness in protecting the nation.
According to her, "National security begins at home. When a police officer reports for duty, another form of service begins at home. Empowering police families is therefore not an act of charity but a strategic investment in the effectiveness, morale and professionalism of our Police Force."
Mrs. Disu also praised the Inspector-General of Police for his continued commitment to the welfare of officers and their families, saying his leadership has encouraged meaningful partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to personnel across the country.
She explained that the empowerment initiative goes beyond vocational training, describing it as a pathway to financial independence, entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of police families.
The POWA President reaffirmed the association's commitment to improving the lives of police families through skills acquisition, healthcare interventions, educational support, entrepreneurship development and assistance to widows and other vulnerable families.
Calling for broader collaboration, she urged government institutions, development partners and corporate organisations to emulate the Nigeria Police Trust Fund by investing in programmes that promote the welfare and economic empowerment of police families.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Mrs. Disu encouraged them to maximise the opportunity by embracing the training with dedication, discipline and excellence, adding that the skills acquired should become the foundation for successful businesses capable of transforming their families and communities.
She further assured the Nigeria Police Trust Fund of POWA's continued partnership, stating that the association's State Chairpersons would work closely with implementing teams to ensure the sustainability and expansion of the initiative across the country.
Mrs. Disu expressed optimism that the programme would reach more police families nationwide, emphasizing that every investment in their welfare is ultimately an investment in a safer, stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
The maiden Skill Acquisition and Empowerment Programme is expected to equip spouses of junior police officers with practical vocational and entrepreneurial skills aimed at improving household income, reducing economic vulnerability and enhancing family stability within the Nigeria Police community.
