The Abia State Police Command has recorded another major breakthrough in its sustained crackdown on criminal elements with the arrest of 13 suspected armed robbers, cultists, and vandals during a series of intelligence-led operations across the state.
The operations, carried out by operatives of the Command's Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and divisional formations, led to the recovery of firearms, live ammunition, suspected hard drugs, communication gadgets, and other dangerous exhibits.
According to the Command, the successes underscore the effectiveness of its kinetic and non-kinetic policing strategies, driven by credible intelligence and proactive crime-fighting measures.
In one of the operations, VCRU operatives arrested Uchenna Agbneiwu, 27, a native of Nkume in Orlu Local Government Area of Imo State, who resides in Ubakala, Umuahia. He was intercepted while transporting a vandalized large galvanized pipeline concealed beneath sawdust inside a white Toyota Hiace bus. Police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects who escaped during the operation.
In a separate operation on August 2, 2026, operatives of the VCRU in Aba North arrested Williams Ifeanyi, 27, of Market Road, Aba, for allegedly robbing a victim at gunpoint along Market Road by Rail. The suspect reportedly dispossessed the victim of a bag and other personal belongings. A locally made pistol and live cartridges were recovered from him.
Similarly, acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Uratta Divisional Police Station arrested John Chigozie, 25, and David Anyaka, 26, in connection with an armed robbery attack at a hotel in Aba on August 1, 2026. A locally made pistol and live ammunition were recovered during the operation, while investigations are ongoing.
In another intelligence-led operation on August 4, 2026, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, Bende Road, raided a meeting of suspected cult members at Umuezeagwu in Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Several suspects were arrested during the raid, while police recovered a pump-action gun, a Beretta pistol, live cartridges, a cutlass, an axe, substances suspected to be hard drugs, walkie-talkies, a face mask, two red berets, and one black beret believed to have been used by the criminal group.
Overall, the operations resulted in the arrest of 13 male suspects, aged between 20 and 27 years, and the recovery of the following exhibits:
- One locally made pistol
- One locally made single-barrel gun
- One Beretta pistol
- One pump-action gun
- Eight live cartridges
- One cutlass
- One axe
- Substances suspected to be hard drugs
- Walkie-talkies
- One face mask
- Two red berets and one black beret
The Abia State Police Command reiterated its commitment to sustaining intelligence-driven policing and urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information capable of aiding the fight against crime.
The Command assured the public that investigations into the various cases are ongoing and that all suspects found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
